There are many adults in the Christian fold between the ages of 18 and 55 who are struggling with at least one compulsive habit, especially masturbation. And a lot of young people join the fold on a daily basis. More than eighty percent of believers who masturbate are perplexed by the phenomenon. Some have given up the struggle, concluding that masturbation is impossible to overcome.
What is Compulsive Habit?
A compulsive habit is any habit that the believer is unable to resist or overcome. It can be outright sexual sins and deviant behaviors, such as fornication, adultery, bestiality, homosexuality, etc. It can also be vices like smoking, drug addiction, overeating, talkativeness, compulsive lies, etc.
The underlying rule is that the believer is disgusted by the habit and is seeking to overcome it. This article discusses masturbation as an example of compulsive habit, because the phenomenon is the most difficult to overcome. By will power, man can decide to stop fornicating or indulging the flesh in immoral acts; but in the case of masturbation, many believers find it difficult to break the habit.
Introduction to Human Nature
God Almighty is real. His ultimate purpose for creating the world is to manifest His life and power through man. Thus He created man in His image and likeness to dominate the earth. But man sinned and lost his glorious position before God. To restore the lost glory, God gave the world His only begotten Son (Jesus Christ) to atone for sins, so that those who believe in Him should be saved, and also partake of divine nature on earth. (2 Peter 1:3-4).
Human nature is illustrated in the Bible to comprise of Sins, Weights, and Leaven. Below is the graphic illustration of man’s natural life:
Sins: Idolatry, adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bestiality, theft, sorcery, murder, lies (to gain undue advantage), witchcraft, necromancy, etc. are examples of sins. The primary consequence of sins is separation of man and God.
Weights: Masturbation (uncleanness), smoking, gluttony, talkativeness, drunkenness, lies (for no reason whatsoever), pornography and many other compulsive habits are weights.
The effect of weights on believers is weakness (a weak spiritual life). The believer is not free from sinful nature and so will be plagued by weakness and many other problems. Though the believer may occasionally experience or manifest God’s power and be perceived to be a strong believer, he or she is nonetheless locked into a roller coaster of up-today-down-tomorrow syndrome.
Leaven: Hypocrisy, wrong belief system, envy, malice, pride, extortion, craftiness, heresies, nepotism, bribery, human wisdom, anger, lies (to protect self, or to avoid punishment), natural strength, fear, slothfulness, procrastination, egotism, impatience, emulations, rivalry, etc., are examples of leaven. Like a virus in its host, leaven are lumps hidden in man, both natural and spiritual alike. It’s quite possible for leaven to ruin the believer’s relationship to God.
So the natural man vacillates between sins, weights, and leaven, thus making it impossible for God and man to relate. But when the Gospel is preached and man believes on the Lord Jesus, he or she begins an eternal relationship with God. All past sins are forgiven and blotted out. But sooner or later the believer will discover that though he or she enjoys the presence of God, certain habits or behaviors encroach on his or her relationship to God.
At some point the believer will start asking questions: Is it a sin? Why can’t I stop this habit? How do I stop this habit?
In light of the foregoing, the compulsive habit that generates heated debate among believers is masturbation. Primarily, there are two different schools of thought among believers. Some opine that masturbation is natural, harmful to no one, hence it is not a sin; while the other school of thought asserts that masturbation is a sin.
God’s Response to Human Nature
“Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” Matt. 5:48. As the Lord Jesus preached on the mount, in Matt 5:48, He charged believers to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.
A careful study of the Bible reveals that there are two sides to human perfection: Purity and Brokenness. To attain perfection, the believer must be purged of sinful nature. And as illustrated by the figure above, sinful nature consists of sins, weights, and leaven. So, God’s response to each part of man’s natural life differs. To sins, God forgives when man is convicted of sins by the Holy Spirit; to leaven, God allows believers to go through baptism of fire (Mark 9:49, Isaiah 43:1-3;1 Peter 1:7); and to weights, God delivers and empowers believers to overcome all compulsive habits.
Freedom from masturbation, sexual struggles, and compulsive habits is possible and not far fetched, but the believer must first realize the truth, that sin is a force (John 8:31-34) and then cry out for help (Romans 7:15-25), before he or she can experience lasting and true freedom. To the school of thought that says masturbation is natural and good for man, the Bible has this to say: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” Rev 22:11. But to those who seek a deeper walk with God, the Lord Jesus said: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36.
Some Facts About Masturbation
Causes:
1. It is not because the believer is unmarried.
2. Many married believers masturbate.
3. Emotion of sex is the second most powerful natural impulse in man.
4. Masturbation is not a habit people fall into, they grow with it.
5. Masturbation is an aberration to the Christian faith.
6. Masturbation is aided by pornography, but porn is not the primary cause of masturbation.
Every Man’s Battle
Masturbation is a compulsive habit that a lot of Christians are struggling with; and in their quest to overcome the aberration, quite a number of believers resort to natural and spiritual activities such as suppression, therapy, fasting and prayers, deliverance sessions, laying on of hands, etc. While all the activities mentioned are valid and essential to spiritual growth, they seldom result in true and lasting freedom from masturbation.
